Biochemistry is the branch of natural science. Biochemistry deals with the structure, properties and metabolism of biomolecules as well as the formation and transmission of genetic information. The Department of Biochemistry aimed to meet a key goal of modern biological science – to implement a detailed understanding of the structure, functions and chemistry of the underlying molecular constituents of cells. The important feature is that biochemistry uses molecular or chemical methods to explain biological processes. The emphasis of research has shifted towards food biochemistry, environmental biochemistry, analytical biochemistry, molecular biochemistry, genomics and proteomics, biotechnology, cellular biophysics and structural biology, clinical biochemistry, biochemical neuropharmacology, bioinformatics, and nutritional biochemistry.

The mission of the Department is to produce competent Biochemists to effectively deliver real products and services for benefits to the society, industry and Pakistan.

The BS (4-year) program offers a comprehensive education in all aspect of biochemistry. The students are offered courses in the first six semesters, while the last year the student will be trained on research project along with compulsory courses. The courses are based on the latest approved curriculum of Higher Education Commission, Pakistan. MPhil and PhD in Biochemistry are offered in the respective specialized fields. The curriculum MPhil and PhD in Biochemistry has followed the curriculum of Higher Education Commission and adopted by the University. The department has specialized laboratories for research on clinical, medicinal, plant, animals, human, food and phytochemical aspects of biochemistry.
